C34 - Manipulation of estrous cycle in case of Failure of service on detected Estus

Hx:

  • Cow
  • 1st heat observed 2 days ago
  • Owner wanted AI of the animal

Examination:

  • Discharge present having normal color but thin in consistency

R/P:

  • Moderate tone in the Uterine horns
  • Ovulation occurred

U/S:
Ovulation was occurred and thus No AI was performed as the time window (for both capacitation and fertilization) has surpassed. It was suggested to client to bring the animal back after 7 days.

Discussion:

  • The animal must be Inseminated on 18th hour of the onset of estrus or 10 -12 hours of the onset of Standing estrus. The ovulation takes place at 24 - 32 hours of the onset of estrus or 18-24 hours of the onset of standing estrus meanwhile the sperms become capacitated and are ready to fertilize the newly ovulated ovum.
  • The egg must be fertilized within 2 hours of the ovulation to avoid its aging complications (conception failure).
  • The reason that why the animal is not inseminated is evident from above statement though.
  • The follicular wave patterns can be manipulated at any stage, normally 3 follicular waves are seen in the estrous cycle of the Bovines in the 21 days, In this case as the first heat (due to the dominant follicle of 1st wave) got missed and at day 9 of the estrous cycle, the follicle of the 2nd wave will be dominated alongwith CL of the this ovulation. So, at day 9 (today as day 0) PG (delmazine) will be injected to cause the luteolysis of the CL and thus the P4 block will be diminished allowing the existing follicle to dominate and exhibit the estrus signs (Due to absence of P4 block and presence of E2 of the follicle), thus the animal may be serviced naturally or with AI to ensure the pregnancy.
  • + the animal is not to be waited for next further 11-12 days and thus the 2nd wave will manipulated to shorten the cycle, lessen the time period (service period) and economize the situation.
