C35-Pyometra in mare

Date: 06-04-2015
Patient: A Mare
Complain: Pus from vagina from last one n the half month.
Animal was brought 4 days ago and treated with Lutalyse(PGF2-alpha) + oxytocin.
Diagnosis: Pyometra
The possible cause of this pyometra may the bad anatomy of perineum of the patient as well the low BCS, causing the vulvar lips remain open hence allowing continuous entry of air into the vagina that is a source of contamination,
Have a look.

Note the anus is so much deep and opened vagina is lying down right after to receive the fecal contamination. that is due to bad anatomy.

Above is the inner view of vestibule showing pus at the floor.
Treatment: antibiotic
gentamycin, oxytetracycline and ciprocin have good uterine availability.
ciprocin is specifically good for toxemic metritis.
Ceftiofur sodium is drug of choice in uterine infections.(3rd generation cephalosporin) @2.2mg/kg
but expensive.
penicillin and aminoglycosides can be used.
penicillin used at double, triple dose for uterine infections.
